China's Jiangsu to expand renewable energy capacity

NANJING -- East China's Jiangsu province, the country's manufacturing heartland, will see its renewable energy consumption rise to over 15 percent of the province's total energy consumption by 2025, according to a recently released plan for renewable energy development.

The province's installed capacity of renewable energy is expected to exceed 66 million kilowatts by 2025, accounting for over 34 percent of the province's total installed power-generation capacity, according to the plan.

Of the province's total renewable energy capacity, the installed photovoltaic power capacity will reach over 35 million kilowatts, while the wind power capacity will exceed 28 million kilowatts by 2025. Jiangsu plans to build offshore wind power bases in its eastern coastal areas to meet the demand for clean energy.

It is estimated that by 2025, the province's renewable energy power generation is expected to help reduce the burning of coal by over 33 million tons annually, equivalent to reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by about 87 million tons.

China has announced that it will strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
